Hi, I'm Dean Pacific. I’m running for Grand Rapids City Commission because I love this city. I’ve lived my whole life here and it has shaped who I am. I grew up playing in John Ball Park and swimming at Richmond pool. I learned to love reading at the Grand Rapids Public Library, and graduated from Grand Rapids Public Schools. And I’ve been blessed to live and raise my family surrounded by neighbors who look out for each other. I’m thrilled to share with you a bit about myself, my roots, and my vision for our community.
I was born and raised on the West Side, on Hovey Street NW, just two blocks from John Ball Park. I attended Straight Street School (GRPS), Sacred Heart, and graduated from Union High School.
My dad worked nights as the janitor at Union. My mom worked as a secretary, first at a small manufacturing company and then at Sacred Heart School. They instilled in me a strong work ethic from a young age.
My first job was delivering the Grand Rapids Press on Watson Street NW, at age twelve. In high school I delivered appliances and sold hardware at Nawara Brothers on West Fulton. After graduation, I worked my way through college in the warehouse at H.H. Cutler Company, behind the counter at Walker Street Pharmacy and the old 7-Eleven on West Fulton, and painting houses. I attended Grand Rapids Junior College before earning my B.A. from Michigan State University. I then went on to graduate first in my class from Ohio State's law school.
My wife Nikki and I have been partners in life for 33 years, navigating the joys and challenges of raising a family. Our home, first on Tamarack near Richmond Park and then on Westwinde, has been the backdrop to our family's story. We are proud members of Holy Spirit Parish. Our four adult children, educated in the community at Sacred Heart, Holy Spirit, and West Catholic, have pursued diverse and fulfilling careers. Our family is rounded out by our two Labrador Retrievers, Eddie and George.
For 28 years, I've worked as an attorney at Warner Norcross and Judd, where I've received numerous professional awards and recognitions, including the highest rating by my peers (AV) for legal ability and ethical standards in Martindale Hubbell and acknowledgments from Best Lawyers in America, SuperLawyers, and Grand Rapids Magazine.
I also work as a court-approved mediator. In this role I regularly work with parties who have strong opposing views and help bring them to a resolution that works for everyone. Successful mediation practice involves a lot of listening, understanding, respecting all views, and asking the right questions to identify areas of common ground. I’ll bring those same skills and approach to the work of the City Commission.
I’ve always strived to not just enjoy what is great about Grand Rapids but to contribute to it. I currently serve on the Grand Rapids Civilian Appeal Board and the Head Start for Kent County Board of Directors. In the past I've also been involved with the John Ball Zoo Board, Faith Hospice Board, Grand Rapids Chamber of Commerce, and numerous church and school boards and committees. Beyond those leadership roles, I’ve also put on my work gloves to do some heavy lifting, or an apron to cook and serve at a fish fry or pancake breakfast, more times than I could count. I’ve always believed in the old saying that “many hands make light work” and have enjoyed the opportunities to work with my neighbors for the good of our community.
I’m running for City Commission to build on what is great about our city. To make our neighborhoods stronger and safer. To enhance economic opportunity for all. And to ensure that city government listens and responds to your concerns.
While partisan politics at the national level becomes increasingly polarized and ineffective, I know that we can do these things in our city. I’d be honored to have your vote in the non-partisan election for City Commissioner on Tuesday, November 5th.
